Abstract

981,564. Mixing flowing liquids in proportions. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES. Jan. 30, 1962 [Feb. 2, 1961], No. 3459/62. Heading B1C. [Also in Division G3] The flow of constituents of a mixture is kept constant by a digital control circuit in which may be set independently both the proportion of each constituent and the total flow of the mixture. Pulses representing actual flow of each constituent A, B, C are compared numerically in devices 24, 28, 30 with reference pulses, the number of which is determined by the setting of selector switches (16, 17, 18 for A) in parallel outputs of a common ring counter 10, 11, 12, and the resultant used to adjust flow regulating valves. The reference pulses are derived from a constant frequency pulse generator 1 connected to an auxiliary counter 2, in the output of which is a selector switch 4 whose setting determines how many pulses in each counting cycle are passed to the ring counter 10, 11, 12 by "and" gates 3 and 9; hence the total flow of mixture is controlled as a percentage of the total possible, which corresponds to all the pulses being passed to the ring counter. The adjustment to the flow is made at the end of each counting cycle, and the start of the next cycle is delayed for this to be effected. It is stated that the counters may comprise bistable circuits having transistors, valves or gasdischarge tubes, and each is associated with a decoding matrix comprising diodes. In an alternative arrangement the selector switches are replaced by punched card setting devices.
