Abstract

In the manufacture of para-(beta-hydroxy-ethoxy) benzoic acid para-hydroxy benzoic acid is reacted with ethylene oxide in an aqueous alkaline solution at a temperature of from 60-100 DEG C. at least one acidic or basic substance being added thereto to maintain the pH within the range of 9.5-11.5 during the reaction to form an alkali salt of para-(beta-hydroxy-ethoxy) benzoic acid and separating the latter from the solution by adding at least one acidic substance thereto. The para-hydroxy benzoic acid and ethylene oxide are preferably used in the ratio of one mol. of para-hydroxy benzoic acid to 1.1-1.4 mols. of ethylene oxide. The acidic substance may be hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, para-hydroxy benzoic acid, para-(beta-hydroxy-ethoxy) benzoic acid or a mixture thereof. Several examples are given.
