Abstract

981,122. Air guns. FEINWERKBAU WESTINGER & ALTENBURGER G.m.b.H. Jan. 19, 1962 [Feb. 24, 1961; July 18, 1961; July 26, 1961 (2)], No. 2016/62. Heading F3C. In order to reduce recoil in an air gun, the barrel, breech casing and all or most of the action are mounted for longitudinal movement in the stock. The trigger device can remain fixed in the stock and the barrel, compression cylinder and piston, the spring and cocking device be slidably mounted in the stock or the whole action can be slidably mounted. In one form the gun comprises a barrel 1, Fig. 1, and breech casing 2 housing the compression cylinder 3, piston 4 and spring (not shown), the piston-rod 5 having a nose portion 6 which engages a part of the trigger device 7 on cocking the gun. The barrel and the whole action including the trigger device are mounted in the stock 11 by means of two blade springs 8, 9 so as to permit swing in the longitudinal direction, the springs also acting as return springs for the action after firing. In another form the barrel and action are supported on slide and roller bearings. One roller bearing 21, Fig. 3, is adjacent the rear end of the barrel and comprises rollers 22 mounted in the action and engaging inclined surfaces 24 on a bearing member 25 firmly anchored in the stock. Rollers 29, Fig. 2, are also mounted on lugs 27 of the action and engage bearing surfaces 31 of a presser pad 30 mounted on the stock 35 by means of blade springs 33. A further bearing 36 at the rear of the action may be a simple slide or a roller bearing. A coil spring 37 serves as a return spring for the action and resilient buffers 45, 46 limit the movement thereof. In a further embodiment, the breech housing 53, Fig. 5, together with the barrel 54 and all the parts associated with the housing 53 are slidably mounted in the stock 55 by means of pins guided in bores. Pins 56 on the breech casing are guided in bores 57 of a member 58 secured to the stock whilst a pin 61 secured to the stock is guided in a bore 62 in the rear end of the breech casing 53. On cocking, a nose member 68 on the piston-rod 67 engages a nose portion on a catch 71 locked by an element (not shown) of the trigger device. The arrangement is such that on operating a cocking lever 80, Fig. 6 (not shown), the action is moved forwardly to the firing position and is held there by engagement of a spring-urged member 76 of the trigger device with the end face of the pin 61 as shown in Fig. 5. On pulling the trigger, the catch 71 moves to release the piston-rod 67 and the member 76 is moved upwardly clear of the pin 61 to permit backward movement of the action relative to the stock.
