[Also in Division F4] A drying roller for drying felt strips used in paper making machines, comprises a cylinder R having radial fins a forming therebetween troughs through which drying fluid is fed. The cylinder R is rotatably mounted in bearings P1 at each end, a stationary distributer D1 having an opening corresponding to the arc along which the felt strip contacts the roller. At each end the troughs are closed by a shutter 01 which is telescopically slidable within a fixed sleeve A1 to adjust the breadth L of the roller through which the drying fluid is blown to the breadth of the felt used. As an alternative the sleeve 01 may be formed by individual shutters sliding in grooves in the sides of the radial fins a. Guiding sleeves B1, B2 formed by individual cylinder sectors fitted between the fins terminate in outwardly flared parts b1 b2 to form annular channels c1, c2, c through which the drying fluid is supplied to the surface of the roller. A distributer D2 is adjustable relative to the distributer D1 and has a sector S1 which can be registered with the inlet of the distributer D1 to supply liquid drying fluid to the three channels cl, c2, c, a sector S2 in which the channel c1 is blanked off and the other two channels are supplied with fluid, and a sector S3 in which the channels c1, c2 are blanked off and fluid is supplied only to the innermost channel c. By closing an appropriate number of the channels some compensation can be made for unequal degrees of dryness across the felt strip being dried. In a modification the sleeve B1 is formed with an end piece telescopically slidable therealong so that an auxiliary adjustment of the streams of drying fluid is obtained.
