Abstract

The invention relates to tetracycline compounds of the general formula <FORM:0980878/C2/1> or <FORM:0980878/C2/2> in which R1 represents a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom, R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R3, R4 and R6 each represents a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl group, R5 represents a hydrogen atom, a dimethylamino group or a quaternised dimethylamino group and R7 represents a trichloromethyl, tribromomethyl or a trifluoromethyl group, or a 4- or 5a-epi-isomer thereof or the 12a desoxy or 5a (11a)-dehydro derivative of a compound having the formula of tetracycline, 5-hydroxytetracycline, 7 - chlorotetracycline or 7 - bromotetracycline but in which the 2-carboxamido group is replaced by a group of the formula <FORM:0980878/C2/3> R7 having the meaning given above or physiologically tolerable salts of said compounds with a base. These compounds are prepared by reacting the corresponding tetracycline which contains no substituents on the nitrogen atom of the 2-carboxamido group or a physiologically tolerable salt thereof with a base, with trichloro, tribromo, or trifluoro acetaldehyde. The compounds may be used in pharmaceutical compositions, e.g. in the form of an injectable solution, a depository preparation or a food preparation. Specification 872,991 is referred to.
