Abstract

980,682. Automatic regulation. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Oct. 18,1961 [Oct. 27, 1960], No. 36871/60. Headings G3R and G3X. [Also in Division H3] A power regulating system for supplying a potential, and for limiting voltage surges outside a permitted range comprises a pair of rectifiers connected in inverse parallel, at least one of which, T, is controllable; a potential divider R, # connected in parallel with the two rectifiers T, D1; and a Zener diode D2 connected between the tapping point of the potential divider and the gate of the controllable rectifier. An excessive positive voltage at A causes the Zener diode D2 to conduct and fire the controlled rectifier T. The rectifier D1 may be replaced by a second controlled rectifier, Fig. 1 (not shown) the trigger electrode of which is taken via a second Zener diode to another tapping point on the resistive potential divider between A and B. In a circuit disclosed in the Provisional Specification two controlled rectifiers are connected in inverse parallel, each being triggered by the potential developed across a rectifier connected in series with the anode/cathode path of the other controlled rectifier. Triggering may alternatively be effected via secondary windings of a transformer the primary of which is connected between the points A, B.
