Abstract

Formaldehyde is prepared by thermally decomposing formaldehyde polymer of low molecular weight or an aqueous formaldehyde solution containing at least 60% by weight of formaldehyde in the presence of at least one acid or salt showing an acid reaction under the reaction conditions, such acid or salt having under the reaction conditions a volatility not exceeding 1% of its weight per hour. Suitable acids are, for example, phosphoric acids, oleum, concentrated and dilute sulphuric acid, arsenic acid, boric acid, molybdic acid, selenic acid, uranic acid, tungstic acid, chlorsulphonic acid, oxalic acid, succinic acid, sebacic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, trichloro-acetic acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid, terephthalic acid, phthalic anhydride and cyclohexane carbonic acid. Suitable acid salts are, for example, ferric chloride, zinc chloride and monosodium and potassium phosphates. Preferably the process is carried out in the presence of an inert liquid medium. Suitable formaldehyde polymers for use in the process are, for example, paraformaldehyde and a - or b -polyoxymethylene. An aqueous formaldehyde solution for use in the process may be obtained by evaporating a more dilute solution until it contains at least 60% by weight of formaldehyde.
