Abstract
Epoxy compounds are prepared by contacting an olefinically unsaturated compound with an organic hydroperoxide in the presence of a catalytic amount of an inorganic molybdenum compound other than molybdenum carbonyl. Suitable unsaturated compounds are aliphatic and alicyclic olefins having 2-30, particularly 2-4, carbon atoms, and unsaturated alcohols, ethers, esters, ketones and chlorides. Specified hydroperoxides include cumene-, t-butyl-, cyclohexanone-, tetralin-, methyl ethyl ketone- and methylcyclohexane - hydroperoxides. The catalyst, preferably used in an amount sufficient to provide 0.02-40 millimols of molybdenum per mol. of hydroperoxide, may be in the form of, e.g. the oxides, chloride, oxychloride, fluoride, phosphate and sulphide of molybdenum or molybdic or phosphomolybdic acid. The reaction temperature may be in the range - 20-200 DEG C. and reactant ratios for mols. of olefin to peroxide in the range 1 : 15 to 20 : 1. The use of a solvent is optional. Examples describe the preparation of propylene oxide and glycidol using t-butyl peroxide and either molybdenum trioxide or phosphomolybdic acid as catalyst.
