Abstract
Copolymers are made which comprise 20 to 90 mole per cent of a monoacrylic ester of the formula: <FORM:0979868/C3/1> wherein R1 is methyl, <FORM:0979868/C3/2> OR5 or <FORM:0979868/C3/3> R2 is hydrogen or methyl, R3 and R4 are each hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy, R5 is a C1-C4 alkyl group, Y is hydrogen when R1 is a 2-hydroxyphenyl group, and hydroxy when it is not, Z is <FORM:0979868/C3/4> or -CH2-CO-R6, and R6 is alkyl or phenyl and in which the benzene nuclei may be mono- or di-substituted with halogen, alkyl or alkoxy substituents, and with 10 to 80 mole per cent of either a combination of from 50 to 90 mole per cent of vinylidene chloride and 10 to 50 mole per cent of an acrylic ester of the formula CH2=CR7-COOR8, or an acrylic ester of the formula CH2=CR7-COOR9, wherein R7 is hydrogen or methyl, R8 is a C2-C22 alkyl group and R9 is a C12-C22 alkyl group. The copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing the monomers either in solution, e.g. benzene, or in aqueous emulsion containing an emulsifier, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate. Suitable initiators of polymerization are azobisisobutyronitrile, and a mixture of ammonium persulphate and sodium thiosulphate. Other azo and peroxy initiators are listed, as are co-ordination catalysts of the type described in Specification 783,487. The resulting copolymers are used to protect other polymers against the action of ultra-violet light, and for this purpose may be coated upon or blended with the light-susceptible polymers, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene and ethylene-propylene copolymer. The examples describe the copolymerization of vinylidene chloride with (1) 4-acryloxy -2- hydroxy-benzophenone and lauryl methacrylate, (2) 4-acryloxy -2- hydroxybenzophenone and ethyl acrylate, (3) 2-hydroxy-21-methacryloxy-benzophenone and 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, (4) 2-hydroxy -4- methacryloxybenzophenone and hexadecyl methacrylate, (5) 4-acryloxy -2- hydroxybenzophenone and dodecyl methacrylate, (6) 2-hydroxy -4- methacryloxy-benzophenone and octadecyl methacrylate, and the copolymerization of (7) 4-methacryloxy -2- hydroxybenzophenone and stearyl methacrylate, (8) 2-hydroxy -4- methacryloxybenzophenone and hexadecyl acrylate, (9) 2-hydroxy -21- acryloxy-benzophenone and docosanyl acrylate, (10) 2-hydroxy -41- methacryloxybenzophenone and octadecyl or stearyl methacrylate, (11) methyl -2. hydroxy -4- acryloxybenzoate and hexadecyl methacrylate, and (12) o-methacryloxybenzoyl benzoyl methane and tetradecyl methacrylate.ALSO:Polyolefin films are protected against the action of ultra-violet light by applying thereto a coating of a copolymer of an alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid, an acryloxy or methacryloxy aromatic monomer which confers resistance to ultra-violet light, and, optionally, vinylidene chloride (see Division C3). The copolymer coating may be applied either as an aqueous emulsion or as an organic solution of the copolymer. The examples describe the application to films of polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene and an ethylenepropylene copolymer of coatings of the following copolymers: (a) vinylidene chloride, 4-acryloxy-2-hydroxybenzophenone and either dodecyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate, (b) vinylidene chloride, 2-hydroxy-4-methacryloxybenzophenone and either hexadecyl or octadecyl methacrylate, (c) vinylidene chloride, 2-hydroxy-21-methacryloxy-benzophenone and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, (d) 2-hydroxy-4-methacryloxybenzophenone and either stearyl methacrylate or hexadecyl acrylate, (e) 2-hydroxy-21-acryloxybenzophenone and docosanyl acrylate, (f) 2-hydroxy-41-methacryloxybenzophenone and either octadecyl or stearyl methacrylate, (g) methyl-2-hydroxy-4-acryloxybenzoate and hexadecyl methacrylate, and (h) (o-methacryloxybenzoyl)-benzoyl methane and tetradecyl methacrylate.
