Abstract

1,141,282. Photoconductive polymeric compositions. ARCHER-DANIELS-MIDLAND CO. 31 Jan., 1966 [15 Feb., 1965], No. 4213/66. Headings C3P and C3R. [Also in Division H1] A composition for use in electrophotographic photoconductive layers comprises (a) a hydrocarbon-soluble alkyd resin of Acid No. below 10 and OH No. below 100, (b) 5 to 40% by wt. of (a) + (b) of a polymer of a mono-ethylenically unsaturated monomer or monomers, a major proportion of which is a vinyl or vinylidene halide, an acrylate, methacrylate or vinyl ester, or styrene or alpha methyl styrene having the formula CH 2 = CR 1 .R 2 , wherein R 1 is H, Cl or CH 3 , R 2 is C 6 H 5 , Cl, F, -CO.R 3 or -O.CO.R 3 and R 3 is C 1-4 alkyl, the mixture of (a) and (b) also having Acid and OH Nos. below 10 and 100 respectively, and (c) photoconductive zinc oxide. The composition may be applied to a substrate such as paper. The alkyd (a) is preferably prepared as described in Specification 969,896; extensive lists of alkyd-forming reactants are given. The polymers (b) may be homopolymers or copolymers with one another, e.g. styreneacrylate copolymers, or with a minor proportion of another monomer, e.g. ethyl acrylate/acrylic acid or vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol copolymers. Photosensitive dyes may also be included in the compositions which are preferably prepared by adding (b) to a solution of (a) and then adding (c) and any other additives. In examples: (a) is a xylene solution of a soya/glycerol/pentaerythritol/phthalic or soya/p-t-butyl benzoic/trimethylolpropane/phthalic acid and (b) a naphtha solution of a n-butyl/isobutyl methacrylate copolymer, a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer, or a vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymer.
