Abstract

Water-repellency compositions comprise a stable aqueous suspension of a wax and a surface-active copolymer, the total organic matter of the compositions being from 10% to 50% of the whole and the weight of the copolymer being from 0,067 to 1,0 times the weight of the wax, the copolymer being the salt or quaternization product of a copolymer made up of n% by weight of units of a basic acrylic monomer of the formula: <FORM:0915759/IV(a)/1> and (100-n)% by weight of a neutral acrylic ester of the formula: <FORM:0915759/IV(a)/2> wherein n has a value of from 20 to 80, R1 is H or CH3, R2 is a C2-C4 alkylene radical, R5 is a C1-C22 alkyl or alkenyl radical, and the radical: <FORM:0915759/IV(a)/3> is derived from a monoalkylamine, a dialkylamine or a secondary heterocyclic amine, one of the alkyls in the alkylamine having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms and the other from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the heterocyclic amine having a 5- or 6-membered ring containing a secondary nitrogen atom. Copolymers specified are diethylaminoethyl or dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-octadecyl acrylate in the form of their acetic acid salts, diethylaminoethyl methacrylatemethyl, propyl and butyl methacrylates in the form of their acetic acid salts diethylaminoethyl methacrylate-dodecyl p methacrylate in the form of its acetic acid salt, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate-octadecyl methacrylate quaternized with dimethyl sulphate, diethylaminoethyl acrylatedodecyl acrylate in the form of its acetic acid salt, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate-octadecenyl methacrylate in the form of its acetic acid salt and diethylaminopropyl or diethylaminobutyl methacrylate-octadecyl methacrylate in the form of their acetic acid salts. Waxes specified are paraffin wax, palm wax, eicosane, beeswax, ozokerite and polyethylene. The wax may be added to an aqueous latex of the copolymer or, alternatively, the wax may be mixed with the comonomers before they are polymerized either in the molten state or in a solvent, e.g. heptane or ethanol. The resulting products are applied to fibrous textile materials in order to render them water-repellent. The Specification describes also the following copolymerization procedures: (1) diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and either octadecyl or octadecenyl methacrylate are copolymerized either in solution in molten paraffin wax or in solution in heptane or ethanol with gradual addition of azodiisobutyronitrile during the course of the reaction, the resulting copolymers being treated with acetic acid; (2) diethylaminoethyl and butyl methacrylates are copolymerized in aqueous emulsion with the aid of an ethylene oxide-long chain alkylamine condensate and potassium persulphate, and then treated with acetic acid; (3) diethylaminoethyl and dodecyl methacrylates are copolymerized in aqueous emulsion with the aid of trimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride and hydrogen peroxide and then treated with acetic acid; (4) as in (3) but employing octadecyl methacrylate in place of the dodecyl ester; (5) the product of (4) is quaternized with dimethyl sulphate; (6) dimethylaminoethyl and octadecyl methacrylates are copolymerized by the procedure of (3); (7) diethylaminoethyl and dodecyl acrylates are copolymerized by the procedure of (3); and (8) diethylaminopropyl or diethylaminobutyl acrylate is copolymerized with octadecyl methacrylate in solution in ethanol with the aid of azodiisobutyronitrile, and then treated with acetic acid.
