Abstract

1,263,148. Copolymer antistatic agents. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 31 March, 1969 [3 April, 1968; 1 Oct., 1968], No. 16847/69. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] Antistatic copolymers are obtained by copolymerizing in water a mixture having a gelating concentration (as defined) of 14-30% by weight and comprising (1) at least one monoester of the formula wherein R 1 is H, methyl or ethyl, R 2 is OH, alkoxy (not more than 18 C atoms), halogen, alkyl sulphide (not more than 18 C atoms), mono- or di-alkylamino (having not more than 18 C atoms), or a phenoxy or naphthoxy radical, and l and m satisfy the relationships 10#l#100 and 0#m<l; and (2) at least one diacrylate or dimethacrylate of a polyol (e.g. ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol). The copolymers may additionally be derived from (3) a component selected from acrylonitrile and acrylate or methacrylate esters of alkanols having 8 or more carbon atoms. Copolymerization of the monomers is suitably effected in the presence of a catalyst such as potassium, sodium or ammonium persulphate or hydrogen peroxide, which may optionally be used as a redox combination with a reducing agent such as sodium sulphite, sodium hydrogen sulphite, sodium thiosulphate, oxalic acid or ferrous sulphate. Polymerization can be effected with or without emulsifying agents.
