Abstract

Azo dyes, free from water-solubilizing groups, of the general formula <FORM:0979135/C4-C5/1> wherein A is a benzene-azobenzene radical possibly substituted by halogen atoms or by alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, trifluoromethyl, nitro, acetyl, -CONHR2 or -SO2NR3R4 groups, and R, R1, R2, R3 and R4 which may be the same or different are H atoms or alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or cycloalkyl groups, are employed in the form of aqueous dispersions to dye fibres of linear aromatic polyesters.ALSO:Linear aromatic polyester fibres are dyed or printed with an aqueous dispersion of an azo dyestuff which is free from water-solubilising groups and is of the formula <FORM:0979135/D1-D2/1> in which A represents a benzene-azobenzene radical which may be substituted by halogen atoms or by alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, trifluoromethyl, nitro, acetyl, -CONHR2 or <FORM:0979135/D1-D2/2> groups, and R, R1, R2, R3 and R4 may be the same or different and represent hydrogen atoms or alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or cycloalkyl groups. Dyeing may be effected at temperatures up to or above 100 DEG C., if desired, in the presence of carriers. Alternatively, the dispersion may be padded or printed on the fibres and the dyestuff fixed by heating or steaming. The dyestuff is dispersed with, for example, alkyl-aryl-sulphonates or condensation products of sulphonated aromatic compounds with aldehydes, such as sodium methylene dinaphthylsulphonate. Examples of dyeing and printing are given and a list of dyestuffs is included.
