Abstract

979,095. Indicator lamps for panel mounting. AMP Inc. July 10, 1963 [July 19, 1962], No. 27363/63. Heading F4R. [Also in Divisions E2 and H2] An electric lamp housing for mounting in an aperture in a panel comprises a tubular housing for the lamp having a transparent or translucent closure at one end and flange means for engaging the side of the panel and fin means extending axially of the housing and projecting laterally thereof for engaging the other side of the panel, the fin means being collapsible circumferentially of the housing for enabling the housing to be passed through the aperture. The housing comprises a base portion 2, Fig. 1, and a cap portion 4 closed by a head 44 of transparent or translucent material having a circumferential flange for engaging.the outer surface of a panel through a hole in which the housing passes. A pair of fins 64 of resilient material are mounted at opposite sides of a collar 58 on the cap portion, each fin having lower inclined edges 66 and upper edges 68, 70, the edges 70 being a short distance above the edges 68. On insertion in the hole in the panel the fins are bent into engagement with the surface of the housing, opening out after they have passed through the hole to secure the housing in position. The tap portion has a pair of diametrically opposite apertures extending above the collar 56 for engagement with a pair of latching members 8 on the base portion 2. A neon lamp 54 is supported at the upper end of the base portion by two members 14 which also form channels 34 with the shell of the member 2 through which conductors 28, Fig. 5, are passed, tongues 40 on the conductors cooperating with shoulders 38 on the members 14 to limit the withdrawal of the conductors. One lead 17 from the lamp 54 is connected to a resistor 76. The other lead and a lead from the resistor are crimped within the folded back ends of the conductors, the fold being corrugated by a suitable crimping tool. The base portion 2 has an I-shaped extension at the rear, in opposite sides of which leads 30 are secured to the conductors 28. For use with thicker panels, the fin members may be slotted successively to release fingers contacting the rear of the panel during insertion.
