A cosmetics holder is provided with a reciprocating push-button device for advancing a stick of cosmetic and a device for retracting the stick by the relative rotary motion of two coaxial barrels. Both devices comprise in common an inner barrel 13, Figs. 1, 2, with longitudinal slot 14 and an outer barrel 17 with helical slot 18, the barrels containing within them a socket 10 having a guide pin 11 which projects through slots 14 and 18. The stick 12 contained by the socket 10 is advanced by rotation of the inner barrel 13 which occurs when a rotary member 37 is acted upon by push-button 50. The outer barrel is prevented from rotating during advancement by the frictional grip between a leaf spring 31, Fig. 3, integral therewith, and the inner surface 33 of a bushing 26a. Retraction of the stick occurs on rotation of outer barrel 17, the user rotating outer casing 22 which via a collar 19 rotates the barrel. Only rotation to cause retraction is possible since grooves 32 cut in the inner surface 33 co-operate with leaf spring 31 to prevent stick-advancement rotation of the barrel. The rotary member 37 comprises ridges 38 and a hexagonal shaft 36, Fig. 2, which engages a hexagonally crosssectioned bore 16 of the inner barrel 13. A sleeve 43, Fig. 1, which is force-fitted into outer casing 22a has inwardly projecting portions 46, 47, the former being rotation keys which engage ridges 38 and the latter being alignment keys which engage slots between extensions 53 on push-button 50. On depressing the button the rotary member 37 is moved axially against the action of a spring 41 and ridges 38 are cleared of rotation keys 46. Rotation of member 37 then occurs, the sloping faces 42, Fig. 5b, of ridges 38 sliding off the faces 54 of extensions 53 and, when the button is released, off the sloping faces 46a of keys 46. The holder is refilled by unscrewing portion 23 from portion 24 of outer casing 22a and removing the inner barrel 13 from within outer barrel 17.
