(Cl. 132-745) This invention relates to cosmetic equipment and appliances used in connection therewith and more particularly to devices employed for applying and removing a surface modifying medium to the lips, nails and the like to change in some degree the color, texture or other characteristics.

The invention further relates to cosmetic applicators which can be easily carried and readily used, and having a degree of permanence by the utilization of suitable refills in appropriate form when the original supply runs low, is exhausted, or when it is desired to change the same.

Cosmetic devices of many kinds have been in use for the application of substances to the lips and other parts of the face, nails and the like. However, these have fallen short, in that they were complicated, could not be used to satisfactorily accomplish their purpose, presented problems in handling and carrying, the substances were improperly exposed, and did not supply an appropriate amount without excess, did not retain proper moisture at all times, could not readily be manipulated, and for other reasons.

It is an object of the invention to provide a cosmetic appliance of simple and inexpensive construction, capable of holding a supply of cosmetic substance in a protective state but readily made available for use, and with the parts readily returnable to operative position and in which the cosmetic substance can be readily changed or renewed.

Another object of the invention is to provide a barrel type appliance with a pointed applicator end and with means for mechanically advancing and retracting the cosmetic substance.

A further object of the invention is to provide a cosmetic applicator having a readily accessible refillable supply chamber and an applicator portion with a discharge passage leading from the supply chamber and with spring. control means for advancing and retracting the discharge mechanism.

A further object of the invention is to supply a cosmetic appliance having a pointed applicator with a chamber of cosmetic material, and mechanical means for supplying the cosmetic material to the point of the applicator under the control of a spring loaded button.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:

Briefly stated, the present invention comprises a cosmetic applicator having a hollow barrel container with cosmetic material and a channel extending therefrom to an applicator point and a cover for such applicator point.

Also, a wick is disposed in the channel leading from the barrel to the applicator point and spring advancing and retracting mechanism is provided. The device may be easily and conveniently carried in a pocket book and kept instantly available for use, and when a supply of cosmetic material is exhausted the device can be filled.

With continued reference to the drawing, the cosmetic dispenser of the present invention comprises a barrel 10 having a chamber 11 for a cosmetic substance such as liquid, semi-liquid, or paste, for application to the lips, nails or other parts of the anatomy. The barrel 10 has a chamber with a threaded opening 12 for reception of the externally threaded portion 13 of a closure having a knurled finger gripping portion 14 of a slightly larger diameter and providing a shoulder 15 between which and the end of the barrel 1!) a gasket 16 is adapted to be disposed for sealing the end joint.

The barrel 10 is provided with a tapered or frusti conical portion 17 terminating in small circular applicator end portion 18 with which an axial channel or bore 19 provides communication with the chamber 11. Thus, cosmetic material within the chamber is adapted to pass through such axial channel or bore 19 to the applicator tip.

In order to control the passage of the material from the chamber 11 to the applicator tip 18, capillary means is provided in the form of a wick 20 extending from the chamber 11 through the bore 19 to the applicator tip. This wick is adapted to be moved longitudinally from the channel 11 and in order to accomplish this a plug 21 is provided having a serrated inner end 22 adapted to in directly engage the wick, such plug being provided with a serrated exposed surface 23 so that the plug may be moved longitudinally of the barrel to advance the wick. The plug 21 is provided with a cross bar 24 slidable in a slot 25 and the serrated end 22 is maintained normally out of engagement with the wick by means of a leaf spring 26 having a slot 27 in which a bar 28, attached to the operating plug, is adapted to slide. Thus, when the serrated exposed portion 23 is engaged by the finger and pressed downwardly and moved longitudinally the wick can be projected and retracted supplying cosmetic material such as finger polish, finger nail polish remover, coloring for the lips, shadow applying substance for the eyelids, all of which can be neatly applied.

A tubular cap 29 is provided of a size to fit over the end of the barrel, the spring 26 assisting in maintaining such cap in position. When thus closed the accidental movement of the plug to advance the wick will be prevented.

- Where material is used in a paste form of paste it will cling to the exterior of the Wick so that there will be no waste with substantially no capillarity. However, the barrel being filled, the wick will have its surface coated with the paste.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is illustrated in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A cosmetic applicator comprising a barrel having a chamber for cosmetic substances, an applicator tip of reduced size, a threaded closure for one end of said barrel, a channel extending from the opposite end of said barrel to said applicator tip, a capillary member within and extending throughout the length of said channel and having one end in said barrel for absorption of the cosmetic material and with its other end exposed so that said cosmetic material may be dispensed, advancing and retracting mechanism for said capillary member having a portion in communication with said channel for engaging said capillary member and having an operating portion exteriorly of said barrel, said barrel having a slot in which said retracting and advancing portion is slidable, spring means for normally maintaining said advancing andretracting means out of contact with said capillary member, and a cap for said applicator tip adapted to maintain said advancing and retracting mechanism in retracted position.

A cosmetic applicator comprising a barrel having a chamber for cosmetic substances, an applicator tip of reduced size, a threaded closure for one end of said barrel, a channel extending from the opposite end of said barrel to said applicator tip, a capillary member within and extending throughout the length of said channel and having one end in said barrel for absorption of the cosmetic material and with its other end exposed so that said cosmetic material may be dispensed, advancing and retracting mechanism for said capillary member having a portion in communication with said channel for engaging said capillary member and having an operating portion exteriorly of said barrel, said barrel having a slot in which said retracting and advancing portion is slidable, spring means for normally maintaining said advancing and retracting means out of contact with said capillary member.

A cosmetic applicator comprising a barrel having a chamber for cosmetic substances, an applicator tip of reduced size, a threaded closure for one end of said barrel, a channel extending from the opposite end of said barrel to said applicator tip, a capillary member Within and extending throughout the length of said channel and having one end in said barrel for absorption of the cosmetic material and with its other end exposed so that said cosmetic material may be dispensed, advancing and retracting mechanism for said capillary member having a portion in communication with said channel for engaging said capillary member and having an operating portion exteriorly of said barrel, spring means for normally maintaining said advancing and retracting means out of contact with said capillary member, and a cap for said applicator tip adapted to maintain said advancing and retracting mechanism in retracted position.

A cosmetic applicator comprising a barrel having a chamber for cosmetic substances, an applicator tip of reduced size, a threaded closure for one end of said barrel, a channel extending from the opposite end of said barrel to said applicator tip, a capillary member within and extending throughout the length of said channel and having one end in said barrel for absorption of the cosmetic material and with its other end exposed so that said cosmetic material may be dispensed, advancing and retracting mechanism for said capillary member having a portion in communication with said channel for engaging said capillary member and having an operating portion exteriorly of said barrel, and spring means for normally maintaining said advancing and retracting means out of contact with said capillary member.

5. A cosmetic applicator comprising a barrel having a chamber for cosmetic substances, an applicator tip of reduced size, a threaded closure for one end of said barrel,

a channel extending from the opposite end of said barrel to said applicator tip and in communication with said chamber a capillary member in such channel, advancing and retracting mechanism for said capillary member having a portion in communication with said channel for engaging said capillary member and having an operating portion exteriorly of said barrel, and spring means for normally maintaining said advancing and retracting means out of contact with said capillary member.

A cosmetic applicator comprising a hollow barrel for receiving liquid material, said barrel being provided with an opening through which the liquid may be introduced, means to close said opening, an elongated passage extending from the hollow portion of said barrel to an end thereof, a capillary member located in said passage and having at least a portion thereof extending into the hollow chamber of said barrel, an outwardly opening channel extending from said passage to the exterior of said barrel, and slide means mounted in said channel for selected engagement with said capillary member to move said capillary member in said channel so that a desired portion thereof may project from an end of said passage for controlling the amount of capillary material from which the liquid may be applied to a surface.

A cosmetic applicator comprising a hollow barrel for receiving liquid material, said barrel being provided with an opening through which the liquid may be introduced, means to close said opening, an elongated passage extending from the hollow portion of said barrel to an end thereof, a capillary member located in said passage and having at least a portion thereof extending into the hollow chamber of said barrel, an outwardly opening channel extending from said passage to the exterior of said barrel said channel including slots in the side walls thereof substantially parallel to said passage and slide means mounted in said channel for selected engagement with said capillary member to move said capillary in said channel so that a desired portion thereof may project from an end of said passage for controlling the amount of capillary material from which the liquid may be applied said slide including a finger engaging portion and a shank extending into said channel with its inner end adapted to contact said capillary member, a cross bar on said shank adapted to be received in said grooves for retaining said slide on said applicator, an arched leaf spring having a slot therein receiving said shank and normally urging said slide out of contact with said capillary member, said shank being operable by said finger portion to engage and move said capillary member.
