CONTAINER Filed Jan. 6, 1944 INVENTOR JOSEPH A EsH/A/ ATTORN EY My invention relate's o fcontainers particularly t'o containers adapted for the electionand withdrawal of commoditiesccntained therein. 7 v t T While'the devices of my invention are adaptable for use with many commodities where it is desirous of exposing and retracting articles carried therein, such as lead pencils, pen holders and many other articles, I prefer to describe it in connection with lipsticks, for which purpose it is particularly adaptable.
Because of the physical characteristics of lipsticks, it is essential that they be carried in a container so constructed that a portion of the lipstick may be ejected from the container for use and may be readily withdrawn thereinto after it has served its desired purpose.
Containers of various constructions have been suggested for this purpose in which the revolution'of a bottom member of the cylindrical container casing causes the lipstick to move inwardly and outwardly of the casing while it is revolving .,-within the casing.

It is necessary that a lipstick should be of a somewhat soft condition in order that it may be readily applied to the lips without undue pressure thereon.
The revolution of a lipstick during its longitudinal movement within a container has a. tendency to cause it to contact the inner face of the container, thus distorting the proper shape of the lipstick, causing a loss of its material, preventing its proper application to the lips and frequently clogging the mechanism.
The most common fault with containers of this character is their liability of becoming Joined and inoperative because of the particular construction of their mechanism co-operating with the helical member. g
In containers in which the article revolves during its movement within the casing, the co-op- .erating mechanism between the element carrying the commodities and the helical element is a, pin connected at only one end which rides along the spaces between the helical coils or convolutions. This-pin cannot be longer than the thickness of the helical material, and hence there is a constant danger of this pin jumping from the space and joining the device, a, result that is quite common in devices of this construction.

The above-mentioned and other valuable features of the container of my invention will be evident upon a consideration of my specification and its accompanying drawing.

The particular form of a device of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing comprises an outer cylindrical casing l0 having an annular opening II in the upper portion luble thereon is a cup member it adapted to 1 receive and maintain a lipstick, open at the top and closed at the bottom.
