A cabinet or baffle 1 covers a segment comprising approximately half of the area bounded by the periphery of a generally circular or elliptical loud-speaker diaphragm, leaving the remainder of this area uncovered, so that a diffraction effect at the edge 8 defining the boundary between the covered and uncovered parts of the area produces a greater spread of sound towards the covered side of the loud-speaker than would be produced if the whole diaphragm were uncovered. Applications include a television receiver as shown, a stereophonic system, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), and a line-source public address system, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown).
