Apparatus for loading or unloading crates with bottles &c. includes endless conveyer belts having means to grip groups of bottles for release in a crate or on to a discharge conveyer. The embodiments shown are unloading but may be run in reverse for loading and in one, filled crates are forwarded by a conveyer 3 so that opened gripper elements on belts 5 engage the bottle necks. Each crate arrives on a support 16, 16a, one of a pair mounted on arms 18 pivoting at 19. The arms rotate so that the crate is lowered leaving the bottles hanging from the belts. The supports 16, 16a have rollers 20 mounted cantilever fashion which, as the support descends, pass between similarly mounted rollers 21. The crate is taken off the support by the latter and rolls on to a discharge conveyer 4. The bottle grippers are opened successively by means 11 to deposit them on a conveyer 3. The supports are locked resiliently in their upper and lower positions and are released by the crates. Conveyers and grippers.-The belts themselves may be of continuous gripper section, Fig. 2, or groups 5 separated by distances between crates may be secured to chains. Rails 13 may support the lower run. Individual grippers 5c may be used. The grippers may be opened by rotary means 10 to receive the bottle necks, be held closed by the rails 13, and re-opened by the member 11 which is of plough form with flanking rollers (Fig. 3 not shown) and also acts as a stripper with its under surface. The machine is adjustable for handling various sizes of article.
