Abstract

Rigid thermoplastic polymer compositions comprise a chlorinated vinyl chloride polymer and 1 to 30% by weight of the polymer of calcium carbonate in the form of particles of size not greater than 4,500 mm . The polymer may be a chlorinated homopolymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride with up to 20% by weight of a comonomer, e.g. vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, vinylidene chloride, maleic acid or anhydride, diethyl maleate or diethyl fumarate. The calcium carbonate particles may be obtained by precipitation or grinding, and may be coated with a non-sticky organic compound one part of the molecule of which is compatible with the chlorinated polymer and another with the calcium carbonate, e.g. lauric, palmitic, myristic, stearic, arachidic, behenic, levopimaric and abietic acid. The compositions may also comprise fillers, pigments, lubricants, stabilizers and minor proportions of plasticizers, e.g. phosphates, adipates, sebacates, phthalates, epoxy resins and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Examples describe compositions comprising chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, tribasic lead sulphate, glyceryl monostearate, calcium stearate and (1 and 3) precipitated calcium carbonate coated with stearic acid and (2) precipitated calcium carbonate. The compositions may be formed into pipes, sheets, channels, guttering, pipe joints and kick panels. Specification 960,506 is referred to.
