Abstract

A composition easily dispersible in water is prepared by precipitating a polar high polymeric organic substance which is not plastic at ordinary temperatures from its aqueous dispersion upon a finely-divided hydrophilic inorganic substance having adsorption capacity, separating and drying the precipitate while avoiding high temperatures, the ratio of the inorganic substance to the high polymer being upwards of 1 : 1. Precipitation may be effected by addition of a small amount of an electrolyte such as aluminium sulphate. The polymeric substance may be a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride or a vinyl ester, and the inorganic substance may be an activated clay such as kaolin, Westerwald clay or bentonite, silica gel or aluminium or magnesium oxide or hydroxide. Examples describe the use of polyvinyl chloride, copolymers of acrylonitrile and acrylic acid esters and of vinyl chloride with methyl acrylate or dimethyl maleate. The dispersions or pastes made from the compositions of the invention may be used for the production of foils, films, coatings and impregnations.
