Abstract

Polypropylene having a good affinity for dyestuffs is made by combining isotactic polypropylene in molten form or in solution with a minor proportion of polypropylene which has been modified by grafting thereon more than 25% by weight of an addition polymer containing hydrophilic groups, e.g. polymeric vinyl alcohol, vinyl pyridine, acrylic acid and its esters and amide and dialkylaminoalkylene methacrylate, such as diethylaminoethyl methacrylate. The modifying polypropylene may be partially or wholly atactic. The resulting compositions may be converted into filaments, fibres and films by melt extrusion. The examples describe the preparation of graft polymers by passing oxygen through a xylene solution of polypropylene, precipitating the oxygenated polymer and contacting it with diethylaminoethyl methacrylate.
