Abstract

Pulverulent compositions for coating metal articles and having a particle size distribution in the range 0.03 to 0.2 mm. comprises 85 to 55 weight per cent of polyvinyl chloride mass polymer having a K value of not more than 60, 12 to 44 weight per cent of a plasticizer and 1 to 3 weight per cent of a stabilizer. The compositions may also comprise up to 10 weight per cent of another vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer, e.g. with maleic acid or vinyl acetate and maleic acid, and up to 5 weight per cent of a liquid epoxide resin. Specified plasticizers are dioctyl phthalate, dicyclohexyl phthalate, dioctyl adipate, octyl tributyl citrate, tritolyl phosphate and polyesters. Specified stabilizers are basic lead carbonate, lead orthosilicate, dibasic lead phosphite, dibasic lead phosphate, cadmium and barium ricinoleates, stearates and naphthenates, alkali metal phosphates and particularly dibutyl tin dimercaptide. Pigments and fillers, e.g. zinc oxide, zinc sulphide, lithopone, barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, carbon black, silica and clay may also be present, and the compositions may be used for fluidized bed coating of metal articles. Examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, dibutyl tin dimercaptide, titanium dioxide and (1 to 3) dioctyl phthalate, (4) dioctyl phthalate and dicyclohexyl phthalate, (5) dicyclohexyl phthalate and (6) a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/maleic acid copolymer, dioctyl phthalate and a liquid epoxy resin.ALSO:Metal articles are coated by immersing the heated articles in fluidized beds of pulverulent compositions having a particle size distribution in the range 0,03-0,2 mm. and comprising 85-55 weight per cent of a polyvinyl chloride mass polymer having a K value not exceeding 60, 12-44 weight per cent of a plasticizer and 1-3 weight per cent of a stabilizer. Preferred plasticizers are dioctyl and dicyclohexyl phthalates. The preferred stabilizer is dibutyl tin dimercaptide. The compositions may also comprise fillers and pigments, up to 10 weight per cent of other vinyl chloride polymers and copolymers, e.g. with maleic acid or vinyl acetate and maleic acid, and up to 5 weight per cent of a liquid epoxide resin. In examples sand blasted iron sheets are coated with compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride, dibutyl tin dimercaptide and titanium dioxide, with (1 to 3) dioctyl phthalate, (4) dioctyl phthalate and dicyclohexyl phthalate, and (5) dicyclohexyl phthalate.
