Abstract

978, 553. Counting-apparatus; electric selective signalling systems. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Jan. 15, 1963 [Feb.15, 1962], No. 1758/63. Headings G4D and G4H. A mechanical counter is provided with cams for the operation of associated contacts to provide electrical read-out when a scanning bail is pressed against the digit wheels. The digits on each wheel are visible through a window in a casing 18. Each flat face of the wheel bears a small cam 19 differentially spaced along the face so that when it is opposite a bail 22 it represents the digit seen through the window. The bail carries a set of contacts 24, Fig. 6 and a set of denominational conductors 29, Fig. 4, so that when the bail is pressed against the digit wheels by cam 31 read-out is effected on the cross-bar principle, denomination by denomination. Subsequent operation of bail 38 by cam 35 wipes the contacts for cleaning purposes. Bails 22, 38 may be modified (Fig. 3, not shown). Counting system. Pulses to be counted from two sources energize solenoid 51 or 55, respectively to control the escapements of spring-driven motors 49, 53. Step motion is thus applied in known manner to the lowest order of two counters. Three numeral wheels on the left are manually settable through wheels 47 to a customer's order number. To effect read-out solenoid 62 is energized. A short first pulse advances clutch mechanism C1, Fig. 9, to position a, whereby clutch drive 66 to the counters is disengaged but incoming pulses are stored by the spring motors. A short second pulse advances C1 to position b to rock bail 22 and effect electrical read-out. A further pulse advances C1 to c to lift the bail 22. If a central station receiving read-out requires a fourth pulse is sent to advance C1 to position d to repeat readout. A long pulse takes the mechanism to position O at which normally stationary shaft 12 is rotated once to carry all numeral wheels to zero position. Read-out may be initiated by a self-latching button 72.
