[Also in Division D1] A textile filament of synthetic polymer has a tetralobal cross-section along its length, the cross-section being symmetrical about two perpendicular lines d 2 and d 3 which bisect it, and having a tip radius ratio r 1 /R of 0.05- 0.80, a lobe angle of 25-65 degrees, and minor and major lobe factors d 2 /R and d 3 /R respec- 2 2 tively of 0.3-0.9. When r 1 /R is 0.05-0.45, d 2 /2/R is 0.30-0.75 and d 3 /2/R is at least equal to (d 2 /2/R+0.15). Tip radius ratio, lobe angle, minor lobe factor and major lobe factor are defined with reference to Fig. 1. The filaments are melt-spun through spinnerets having tetralobal orifices (Figs. 2 and 3). The filaments may be of e.g. polyamides, polyesters, polyolefines, polycarbonates, vinyl and acrylic polymers, cellulose acetate or regenerated cellulose and may contain pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide. The filaments may be spun as tow, monofilament yarn or multifilament yarn, and may be composite, consisting of e.g. a sheath of polyamide around a core of polyester, or of two acrylonitrile polymers in ionic group content. The filaments have, inter alia, improved optical properties. Specifications 871,112 and 905,895 are referred to.
