The material 13, such as cellular rubber or plastic material, is fed to a disc or roller 11 having a helical or peripheral slot 12. Feed and take-off rollers guide the strip as it passes to and leaves the V-chaped cutter 14. If a dovetail slot is to be cut, two cutters are used and the slot is tapered to compress the lower part of the strip more than the upper. A grinding wheel can be used to provide a rounded edge on the strip. Several successive cuts can be made if the strip is fed around a helical slot.
