A mattress comprises two layers of polyurethane foam of different compression hardness bonded together at one of their main faces, e.g. by an adhesive such as a polyurethane prepolymer or a rubber solution containing a polyisocyanate. The foam layers may be plain, or one or both may be formed with cavities e.g. of dome, cylindrical or wedge shape; they are preferably of equal, but may be of unequal, thickness. Differing degrees of compression hardness may be produced by using different constituent polyols, using softening, or different softening, additives, or providing different degrees of foaming, e.g. by using different proportions of water and excess isocyanate or isothiocyanate, or using auxiliary foaming agents.
