Abstract

A thermal insulative fabric, which takes advantage of the low thermal conductivity of enclosed air within a chamber, comprises two layers of closed cell elastomer, one of the layers being punctuated to provide air pockets between the layers. Also this fabric provides an increased buoyancy factor, and thus confers advantages with regard to safety and survival in the instance of cold water emersion. The fabric is intended for use in the surface water sport field where buoyancy combined with efficient retention of body heat are essential for comfort and survival. <IMAGE>

Description

THERMAL INSULATIVE FABRIC.
This invention relates to a thermal insulative fabric made up as a compound laminate utilizing natural or synthetic rubber compound as the thermal insulator.
Rubber compounds have been used as thermal insulators for many applications, taking advantage of the low thermal conductivity of such materials.
It has been shown that, if air is introduced into the elastormer, at the time of formation, in the form of air cells, either closed or open, the thermal efficiency is further enhanced.
An excellent example of such an application is closed cell neoprene, as used in the construction of wet suits, which reduce the effects of cold water immersion.
According to the present invention there is provided an advanced thermal insulative fabric, spcifically for the use in surface water sports and survival equipment.
The composite laminate is constructed from two sheets of elastomeric rubber compounds, for example closed cell neoprene or, closed cell hyperlon.
It must be said that any elastomer capable of forming a closed cell foam matrix would be suitable, but neoprene has shown its self as the most suitable.
The two sheets are laminated together by suitable adhesive systems.
Appropriate fabrics may be laminated to the outer and inner surfaces of the composite, these being designated by the requirements of end use.
Sheet A has domes permantly formed in the elastomeric sheet and sheet B is of an uninterupted, continuously uniform nature.
The resultant composite laminate, provides an elastomeric sheet with relatively large pockets of trapped air within the body of the fabric.
The purpose of the air pockets are as follows: 1) Enhanced thermal insulative value in the new fabric when compared with conventional neoprene, as a result of the ins ulative value of the trapped air (Air had a lower thermal conductivity than rubber.) 2) Increased buoyancy of the fabric and thus increased buoyancy of any garment constructed from the fabric. (Specially useful for the construction of surface sport, wet suits/ dry suits/semi dry suits and survival clothing).
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1. shows a cross section of the dome and chamber arrangement within the composite laminate.
Figure 2. shows a three-dimensional representation of a dome and chamber with in a typical sheet of the composite laminate.
Referring to the drawing Fig. 1 the fabric comprises a continuous base elastomer sheet B which is between 0.5mm and 5mm in thickness, ideally of 3mm.
Elastomeric sheet A, of a similar substrate has a body thickness of 0.5mm to 5mm, ideally of 3mm and contains chamber domes permantly formed by specific conditions of temperature and pressure.
The external height of the dome E is between 0.5mm and 5mm and ideally 2.5mm.
The external diameter of the dome F is between 3mm and 20mm, ideally at 15mm.
The internal diameter of the chamber D is between lmm and 18mm and ideally 12mm.
The internal height of the chamber C is between lmm and lOmm and ideally 6mm.
The density of distribution of chamber/dome elements within a sheet of the composite laminate is between 500 per mX to 5,000 per mX and ideally 2,500 per The finished composite laminate is constructed from a single base sheet or internal laminate, of closed cell elastomer such as neoprene.
To this sheet is bonded, by suitable adhesive systems, a sheet of similar elastomer, but with the domes and chambers preformed.
The forming of the chambers and domes is carried out by the pressing of the closed cell elastomer at suitabe temperature and pressure.
The pressure being between 251bs per sq. inch and 751bs per sq. inch and ideally at 501bs per sq. inch.
The temperature being between 100 C and 200 C and ideally at 1500C.
The resulting composite laminate contains numerous air pockets which remain permantly within the body of the composite fabric.
The composite laminate can be protected suitably, according to end use, by the application of fabric laminates to the internal and external surfaces.

Claims (1)

  1. A thermal insulative fabric, comprising of areas of full thickness closed cell elastomer, and areas of elastomer punctuated by air pockets, formed within the body of the composite laminated elastomer.
These air pockets enhance the thermal efficiency of the fabric by reducing the overal thermal conductivity per unit area, as compared to conventional elastomers such as neoprene.
The air pockets also increase the overal buoyancy of the fabric and thus confer benefits in the construction of clothing suitable for surface water sports and survival suits.
