Abstract

1452795 Bouyant foam laminates; shaping sheet material T M MORRIS 19 March 1975 [7 March 1974] 10186/74 Headings B5N and B8A [Also in Divisions A3 F4 and H5] Flexible bouyant sheet material comprises two inherently bouyant closed-cell foam sheets spaced apart over their major area but contacting each other at localized zones to form a plurality of sealed compartments. The material is made by heating the sheets and then pressing them together whilst subjected to vacuum so that they are held apart between the zones of contact. The sheets may be of closed-cell polyethylene and may have internal and/or external woven nylon facings. The pressing may take place between vacuum dies, the sheets being heated either in a pre-heating zone on an assembly line or, as shown, by a movable heater 40 which can be placed between the spaced dies 26, 27 on which the sheets 10, 11 are held by a light vacuum. Each die is connected to a vacuum pump 29 and comprises a hollow box 33 containing supporting beams 31 and provided with metal strips 34 and plaster mouldings 35 for defining the shape of the sheets. Air flow passages 32, 37 are provided. When heating is complete, the vacuum is increased and the dies 26, 27 are brought together. Uses:-Life jackets, mattresses, cushions, lifebuoys, packaging, swimming pool covers.
