[Also in Division H1] Cable insulation is shaved down by passing it through a bore 2 of a shaft 5 (Fig. 1) in a rotating shaving head 3 which includes a cutting tool, cutting a length of swarf from the insulation and shearing the swarf into pieces between the shaving head and a blade in sliding contact therewith. The cutting edges 25, 26 and 27 (Fig. 2) of the cutting tools 22, 23 and 24 cut helical strips 44, 45 and 46 from the insulation which pass radially outwards through passages 15, 16 and 17 in a flange 6 on the shaft 5 until the slots pass under vanes 30, 31 and 32 by which the strips are cut into short lengths. The vanes may be fixed or rotatable to vary the size of the sheared insulation pieces which are removed by an air pump connected to the casing by a pipe 42.
