Heading A2C Apparatus for mechanically checking cigarettes for strength consists of three conveyer belts 1, 5 and 8 travelling in the same direction and arranged in line at mutual spacings. Adjacent to the gap 4 between the first and second conveyer belts, perpendicular presser belts 11 and 12 are provided extending parallel to the conveyer belts 1 and 5 and having mutually facing runs spaced at a distance which is slightly smaller than the length of the cigarettes. A pressure exerting finger 15 is fitted between the two runs of the belts 11 and 12 and the gap between the conveyer belts 1 and 5 to exert a downward pressure on the cigarettes so that faulty cigarettes are caused to buckle and fall downwardly thorugh the gap. The cigarettes are engaged at one end between a further pair of belts 16 and 17 and at the gap between the second and third conveyer belts 5 and 8, the pair of belts 16 and 17 travelling at slightly different speed, whereby these belts grip and twist the mouthpiece end of the cigarettes while conveying them. A deflector surface 22 is provided near the belts 16 and 17 which engages any cigarettes which tilt downwardly during the rolling, due to faulty connection between the mouthpiece and the cigarette, and deflects these downwardly further, thereby tearing them from the mouthpiece ends gripped between the pair of belts 16 and 17.
