Abstract

1388626 Testing cigarettes HAUNI-WERK KORBER & CO K G 28 April 1972 [30 April 1971] 19887/72 Heading A2C In an apparatus for testing cigarettes &c by introducing a test air stream into them while they are being conveyed transversely to their axes, in which sealing elements by which the test air stream is guided into the cigarettes are engaged with the end faces of the cigarettes, a "sealing" air stream is guided upon the periphery of each end of the cigarettes so that a pressure is established outside the cigarettes in the region of their ends which corresponds at least approximately to the pressure of the test air stream in the region of their respective ends. The sealing elements 14, Fig. 3, which are mounted on a test drum and are cam-retractable against springs in the manner described in Specification 1,187,262 and which feed test air to the cigarettes 68 through a bore 75 in a cylinder 73, additionally include a ring- shaped nozzle 69 through which "sealing" air is directed perpendicularly to the surface of the cigarette 68 around its end. The "sealing" air may, as shown in Fig. 4, be directed with a horizontal component towards the end of a cigarette 168 by use of a suitably angled ring nozzle 221. Methods for providing both ends of double length filter cigarettes with "sealing" air and one or both ends with test air are illustrated by means of pneumatic pipe diagrams.
