The ends of cigarettes to be tested by air pressure or suction and moving transversely on a conveyer are sealed off during testing by control of movable cigarette engagement means provided adjacent the ends of the cigarettes. As shown in Fig. 1, a checking drum 1 has holders 2 to which are fastened bearing plates 4 formed with sealing blocks 5. Pivoted at 14 and 15 are arms 12 and 13 which carry cigarette end embracing jaws 10 and 11. The jaws are urged apart by a spring 19, but may be pressed against the cigarette end by the upward movement of rollers 23 and 24 mounted in a U-shaped carrier 22. The carrier is mounted on a rod 25 provided with a roller 28 which runs over a cam 30 as the drum rotates. The cigarette is positioned so as to form a chamber 39 between its end and the block 5. Air under pressure or suction is applied to the chamber 39 via a duct 7 in the block 5, variation in the flow of air through the cigarette from a normal value being detected and a control signal being puroduced to control rejection of faulty cigarettes. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2) jaws 46 and 47 are provided, operated by cams 58 and 57 respectively, the jaws being connected by rods 49 and 50 to jaws at the other end of the checking cylinder 41 for gripping the ends of groups 43 consisting of two cigarette lengths between which is a double-length filter. Air is supplied through the assembly when the jaws are closed and passes through bores 70, 69, 63 and 64 to a feed pipe 65 which is put into communication with the bore 64 at the appropriate time by a cam operated rod 62. The pipe 65 leads to a checking appliance for rejecting faulty groups.
