1,189,020. Testing mouthpiece cigarettes. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. and D. W. MOLINS. 10 Oct., 1968 [11 Oct., 1967], No. 46374/67. Heading A2C. The joints between cigarettes or similar rod-like articles and mouthpieces attached thereto are tested for air leaks by forming around each article in turn an air pressure zone only in the region of the joint so that the periphery of the joint is subjected to an air pressure different from that at an end of the article thereby to cause air to flow at least through a faulty joint and the air flow so produced is used in effecting rejection of such faulty articles. A pair of cups 1, 2 embrace a cigarette 3 and its filter mouthpiece 7 with a slight gap 4, the cups 1, 2 providing a chamber 5 encircling the region of the joint 6. Suction or compressed air is applied to a port 8 and any increased flow of air due to a faulty joint is detected and used to reject the faulty cigarette. Series of cups 1, 2 may be arranged each on a pair of drums arranged to rotate to bring pairs of cups successively into co-operation, or they may be carried by a single endless conveyer with one member of each pair movable relative to the other on the conveyer.
