Abstract

A water-thinnable stoving lacquer based on an aqueous solution or dispersion of a phenolformaldehyde resin, a melamine-formaldehyde resin, a urea-formaldehyde resin, an alkyd resin, a vegetable or animal oil, an acrylate or methacrylate resin or a styrene-butadiene resin, contains in addition (i) a chelate complex of a monomeric or polymeric aliphatic or aromatic titanic acid ester of formula Ti(OR)4 or Tin\O3n+1\ R2n+2 (in which R=ethyl, butyl, propyl, phenyl or cresyl, and n=1 or more) and a solvent for the ester, which is diacetone alcohol, acetyl acetone, acetoacetic ester or an alkanolamine, and (2) sufficient of an agent retarding crystallisation to prevent crystallisation of the chelate complex. The agent retarding crystallisation may be an ether alcohol, alkanolamine or furane. In the example a composition is described containing phenol-formaldehyde resin, water, isopropyl alcohol, lithopone, black oxide, ethyl glycol and a chelate of 25% butyl titanate with 75% diacetonic alcohol. Lacquer coatings from a water based phenolic resin containing 5% of a 25% butyl titanate solution in diacetone alcohol and methyl isopropanolamine urea compared with coatings from a similar lacquer without the additions.
