Abstract

977,047. Writing instruments. W. A. SHEAFFER PEN CO. Nov. 28, 1963 [Dec. 12, 1962], No. 47090/63. Heading B6P. A marking point of the " felt " type consists of a matrix of interconnected particles of synthetic resilient polymer, preferably polyolefine (polyethylene or polypropylene) or polyamide, the voids forming capillary passages for the transmission of ink under writing pressure. If the material be polyethylene, the ink should include, or the point should be coated with, a wetting agent. The point may ber formed by: placing polymer particles in a porous mould and heating while passing gas therethrough to fuse or sinter the particles together; placing a mixture of particles and a water-soluble substances e.g. salt, sugar or starch in a mould, heating to fuse the particles together and then leaching out the substance; forcing a gaseous or liquid solvent through a mass of particles to fuse them at their points of contact; or cutting the point from an extruded rod of the porous material. As shown the point 24 is a friction fit in a pen barrel 12 which holds a supply of ink, the barrel being normally closed by a spring-loaded valve 22 having a downward extension 28 abutting the point. Spring 40 is strong enough so that writing pressure will not cause the point to open the valve; to charge the point, it is pressed in harder to open the valve, the synthetic material being stiff enough to allow this.
