Abstract

The writing ball of a ball-point pen (see Group XV), is made by compacting either nickel coated or cobalt coated tungsten carbide particles, sintering the mass, and finishing by grinding. In a modification, uncoated tungsten carbide particles are compacted and sintered, and the mass is impregnated with a material which is more wettable to ink so that the surface of the ball, and the inner surfaces of the voids within the ball, are coated. The size of particles used is five microns or less in diameter.
