A ball-point pen comprises a ball 14 housed in a socket member 13, both the ball and socket member being formed of sintered carbide material. The socket member 13 may be moulded from material using 50% tungsten carbide and 50% cobalt binder. The socket member has surfaces 21 separated by grooves 22 which connect an ink feed channel 20 with an annular space 23 formed by moulding. The ball 14 is engaged by a narrow annular surface 26 formed by pressure forming the corner between surfaces 30 and 32. In the pressure forming operation a ball 34 is forced into the socket member 13 with sufficient force to form the surface 26. The balls 14 and 34 may be formed of 10% cobalt binder and 90% tungsten carbide. A lip 28 is formed by swaging with the ball 34 in position, the ball being subsequently removed by a pin inserted through the channel 20. A writing ball 14, of slightly smaller diameter, is then forced into the socket member. The carbide materials may be titanium carbide, tantalum carbide or boron carbide instead of tungsten carbide, while the binder may be iron, chromium, nickel, copper or stainless steel instead of cobalt.
