In a dynamo-electric machine of the type cooled by a fan arranged to blow air axially through the machine, the fan 14 is contained in a separate housing 21 and is shaped so that dust or other small particles are thrown by centrifugal action towards the outermost periphery of the fan, and are ejected from the housing through circumferential slots 29 in the housing. As described, the fan has a frusto-conical outer rim 20 and an annular baffle 24 is disposed so as to guide the particles into the slots. A mesh filter 27 is also provided to remove larger particles.
