Abstract

The invention comprises 9b , 10a -19-norandrost-4-en-3-one derivatives of the general formula <FORM:0976728/C1/1> in which R is a hydrogen atom or an acyl radical, and a process for the preparation thereof in which a 3-alkoxy-3-methyl-19-nor-4-oxa-9b -androst-5(10)-ene of the general formula <FORM:0976728/C1/2> (wherein R is as defined above and R1 is a lower alkyl group) is subjected to treatment with a strong acid, e.g. HCl, or alternatively a 3-methyl-7-keto-8-(g -ketobutyl)-3,4-[31-acyloxy -cyclopentano-(21, 11)]-decahydronaphthalene of the general formula <FORM:0976728/C1/3> wherein Ac represents an acyl radical, is subjected to treatment with an alkaline dehydrating agent at elevated temperature to yield the 17b -hydroxy-9b , 10a -19-nor-androst-4-en-3-one as a secondary product, which is isolated by chromatographic separation, and fractional crystallization and optionally thereafter acylated at the 17-position.
