The leading cutting edge of a coal cutter pick is so formed by the junction of substantially plane surfaces meeting at an obtuse included angle that the entire edge lies forwardly of a line joining the extremities of the edge whilst a pair of lines joining said extremities to the point on the edge which when the pick is in use will be the first point to contact the coal will meet at an included obtuse angle. Various embodiments to the illustrated are described in detail.
