Abstract
976,143. Welding by pressure. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. Feb. 14, 1961 [Feb. 23, 1960], No. 5476/61. Heading B3R. Apparatus for roller seam resistance welding two halves 27, 28 of a workpiece, e.g. a fuel tank, comprises a table 1 adjustable relatively to the roller electrodes 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, a jig 22 on the table for supporting the work and a roller 9 in combination with a plate 21 attached perpendicular to the table, for guiding the jig, the guide roller being adjustably mounted on the table with its axis perpendicular to the table and the rotation of the roller electrodes in contact with the work causing the movement of the workpiece and jig on the table. The table 1 is vertically adjustable on a structure 7 adjustable about a pivot 6 on a base 5 and carries the roller 9 adjustable by an eccentric device towards and away from the plate 21 secured at right angles to the table. The jig comprises a rigid frame 22 having a vertical wall corresponding to the line to be welded and supported freely on the table by balls 24, castors, plastic studs &c., the jig carrying a pan 26, insulated therefrom, for carrying the two halves 27, 28 of a fuel tank. In operation with the tank in the pan and its edges 29 lightly tack welded and the jig wall between the roller 9 and the plate 21, the electrodes are engaged with the edges 29 and rotated so that the jig is caused to move and the edges 29 caused to follow their proper course. Weld timing mechanism may be provided and the roller 9 is adjustable in a slot at right angles to the axes of the welding rollers.
