Abstract

832,107. Welding by pressure. GALLAY Ltd., and DELANEY, C. T. Aug. 11, 1958 [Sept. 9, 1957], No. 28405/57. Class 83 (4). In an electric resistance seam-welding machine the workpiece is moved between two electrodes, one being a rotatable idler wheel and the other a rod pressed towards the wheel. The workpiece 13 is an annular pad consisting of heat insulating material 45 in a metal, e.g. stainless steel, envelope 44. The machine welds a plate 46 to an end channel member 49 of the envelope. The workpiece is held by a strap 17 between locating stops 15, 16 on a rotary bed 12. The wheel 18 is recessed to engage the lower corner of the envelope and is freely rotatable in an adjustably mounted block 20. The rod electrode 31 has a removable spherical tip 32 and is pivotally mounted in a block 29 adjustably supported on the machine frame 11. A plunger in a compressed air cylinder 37 is connected to the rod electrode 31 to lift the tip 32 from or press it against the workpiece 13. Coolant, e.g. water, is passed through a pipe 53 on to the workpiece. In a modification for welding flat workpieces, the bed is traversed linearly.
