Abstract

975,639. Electric heating pads. C. J. WILLIAMS. March 8, 1963 [Sept. 7, 1962], No. 34320/62. Heading H5H. An electric heating pad includes a resistanceheating element disposed within and electrically insulated from a flexible metal casing, which casing is mounted on but spaced from a flexible supporting plate. Resistance wire 2 is enclosed in a layer of asbestos wool, or sandwiched between layers of asbestos sheeting, within a flat casing 3 of copper or aluminium foil. Clamping block 5 for the supply cable 7 is mounted partly within and partly without the casing 3, and spaces the latter from the hardboard, plywood, or plastics supporting board 1, the intervening space being filled with asbestos wool, and the whole being enclosed by an outer woven or plastics cover 13. Earth lead 10 is connected to an earthing block 11 mounted on the foil casing 3. A plurality of the foil casings containing a resistance wire may be employed, or such a casing may be mounted on each side of a supporting plate; fibreglass rather than asbestos wool insulation may be employed, and additional insulating layers of polyurethane or foam plastic sandwiched between corrugated or quilted sheets of p.v.c. may be provided within the foil casing. A modified embodiment includes a collapsible arrangement of struts attached to the pad, by the use of which it may be stood in an upright position (Figs. 12 to 17, not shown). The method of manufacturing the pad is described, including the manner of folding a foil sheet to form an enclosing casing provided with ventilation channels.
