Abstract

[Also in Divisions H3-H5] An electric heating element comprises a generally flat resistive element 1 sandwiched between a pair of composite layers 20, 21 which are joined together, each composite layer comprising a sheet 4 of moisture impervious synthetic plastics film, a sheet 5 of foamed natural or synthetic polymer and a sheet 6 of fabric. In the electric blanket shown, the resistive element 1 comprises a sheet of glass fibre or Terylene (Registered Trade Mark) fabric coated or impregnated on one or both sides with a conducting natural or synthetic polymer. Braided copper wire conductors 2, 3 are sewn to the element 1 and are connected to conducting sockets 10, 11 respectively by crimping to conductors 12, 13 provided for the respective sockets. The conducting sockets 10, 11 are formed in a socket 9 which is secured to one edge of the composite layers 20, 21. The composite layers 20, 21 are stitched together round the periphery 7 and between the parallel runs of wire conductors 2, 3 at 8. Insulating tape is applied to the edges of the element to render it moisture proof. The runs of wire 2, 3 extending parallel to the top edge are arranged between three sheets of insulating material, 14, 15, 16, conductor 3 being in pockets formed between sheets 14, 15 and conductor 2 being in pockets formed between sheets 15 and 16. A plug or two core lead may replace the socket 9. Instead of stitching along lines 7, 8, 18 the composite layers may be bonded with adhesive, welded by radiofrequency heating, or heat sealed together. The resistive element 1 may be in the form of a plurality of parallel fabric strips coated or impregnated with conductive polymer and sewn to the conductors 2, 3 to form a grid structure. Bare or partly bare wires, or strips of coated fabric in sinnuous form may also be used as the resistive element 1. The heating element may have the fabric sheet outermost so that it can be used as it is as an electric blanket or it may be placed in a removable cover to form the blanket. It may be used as a cistern jacket, in a rug, or carpet warming panel.
