A fastener for a hinged structural member 15 such as a window includes a linear torsion bar 11 for transmitting a closing force to at least one engaging element adapted to cooperate with a like number of abutments, when the abutments are arranged on a stationary member and the engaging element or elements is/are arranged on the closing stile of the hinged member or vice-versa. As shown the torsion bar 11 is mounted by means of brackets 13 and 14 at its ends on the member 15 shown as a casement window, two engaging elements 17, 18 being provided on the bar adjacent the brackets for engaging abutments 19, 20 fixed to the frame to which the member 15 is hinged. The bar 11 is rotated to engage and disengage the elements 17, 18 from the abutments 19, 20 by means of handle 21 which is pivotally connected to the bar 11 near its centre. The handle 21 co-operates with a bracket 26 fixed to the member 15 the bracket having a slot to hold the handle and therefore the bar in its position in which the elements 17, 18 are disengaged fromthe abutments 19, 20. The bracket has a second slot which holds the handle in a position in which the elements 17, 18 are engaged with the abutments and in which the bar is torsionally stressed so that the member 15 is held firmly closed and in a substantially rattle-free condition. The second slot is provided at its entrace with a cam portion 29 Fig. 6, to stress the bar as the handle is moved into the slot.
