975,344. Incinerators. L. VON ROLL A.G. March 3, 1961 [March 3, 19601, No. 7914/61. Heading F4B. Refuse is fed at a controlled rate to a drying surface impervious to gas to form a thin layer, and thence fed to a separate combustion grate positioned so that the refuse on the drying surface receives radiant heat from the combustion grate and the furnace arch. Refuse from a hopper 2 is fed at a controlled rate by a plunger 3 to a drying cylinder 5, rotating at a controlled speed to feed the refuse to a travelling grate 9. Air is supplied below the grate 9, and a burner 17 above the grate assists the combination. In a modification, Fig. 2, the feed plunger is replaced by a movable step grate 3, and the refuse is dried on a second step grate 19. The auxiliary burner 17 is mounted above the drying grate 19.
