Abstract

Water is removed from oil, such as that used in oil-filled transformers, by cooling the oil to take the water out of solution to form a suspension as droplets, and passing through an electrostatic precipitator, having electrodes between which a direct potential is applied, to neutralize the charges on the water particles so that they are aggregated and collected. The precipitator may be in the cooling chamber, or in a separate chamber. The aggregated water may be removed by means of a filter. The electrode(s) may be lined with an electrically insulating material, for example glass, and means for periodically wiping surfaces on which the water collects may be provided. The electrodes may be in the form of concentric cylinders, the oil passing through the annular space between them.
