Abstract

1,202,065. Purifying gases; electrostatic separation. A. M. MARKS. 30 Aug., 1967 [3 Oct., 1966], No. 39606/67. Headings B1R and B2J. In an apparatus for purifying a gas containing solid and/or other impurities the gas is passed through a conduit 10 is sprayed with a mist of fine liquid droplets from capillary tubes 16, an electrode 18 connected to a source of D.C. potential being disposed such that a charge is imparted to the fine droplets of liquid, the charged liquid droplets subsequently being co-agulated and discharged to remove the impurities. Liquid is supplied from a tank 13 by a pump 14, chemical additives such as a peroxide being supplied from a tank 28. The electrode 18 may be in the form of spaced vanes between which the gas and liquid spray pass and the discharging means may comprise a lattice-member 25 with needle-like projections 26. Alternatively the discharging means may consist of a sleeve mounted within and insulated from the conduit 10 and maintained at a potential opposite to that applied to the electrode 18. In a modification the gas to be cleaned is divided into two streams each stream being sprayed with fine liquid droplets, a positive charge being given to the droplets in one stream and a negative charge to the droplets in the other stream after which the streams are reunited.
