Abstract

1395323 Electrostatic precipitators C A LAWS 8 May 1972 [10 May 1971] 14034/71 Heading B2J A precipitator for removing dust from air comprises a casing 14 having an inlet slot 11, an ionising wire 10, a polarising electrode 12, collecting electrodes 13 and a control circuit (not shown) which correctively varies the ionisation potential in dependence upon detected variations in the current to the electrodes 13 the wire 10 being energised at such a value as to produce subsantially no ozone in the air to be filtered. The electrodes 13 are of disposable card or the like with a suitable conductive coating which may be covered with white paint so that any dust collected is readily visible; the electrodes may also be treated with a water-absorbent material, e.g. phosphorus pentoxide, which tends to minimise reverse ionisation. Additional polarised electrodes (20) may be provided in the upper part of the casing 14 (Fig 3, not shown). In a modification, the casing is horizontal and is divided into an upper filtering chamber (17) and a lower ionising chamber (25), the two chambers communicating through a central opening (26) Figs 4 and 5 (not shown).
